Habitat for Humanity offers low-income working families a hand up, not a hand out!
Habitat Red Deer does not give away free houses, but promotes affordable homeownership by working in partnership with families. We build new homes with volunteer labor and community support with contributions of donated materials and funds. The homes are then sold to the selected family at the appraised value upon completion.
The family enters a no down-payment, no-interest affordable mortgage with Habitat Red Deer, with payments set at approximately 25% of the family’s gross income. The mortgage terms are typically 25 years and have some special terms, such as requiring that the homeowners remain the principal occupants of the home and keep it in proper repair. Homeowners may sell the home back to Habitat at any time if they choose to move out, and a new family is then selected to purchase the home.
About the Homes
Home sizes and styles vary, but typically are as follows:
- 900 square feet for a 2-bedroom house
- 1000-1200 square feet for a 3-bedroom house
- Unfinished basement
- Multi-family (duplex, triplex, etc.)
Habitat Red Deer provides the following with the home:
- Sod in front yard
- Seed in back yard
The homeowner must provide their own:
- Washing machine and dryer
- Additional landscaping
The homeowner is also responsible for the payment of property taxes, home insurance, maintenance and repairs, and all costs associated with owning and operating a home.
Where We Build
Habitat Red Deer has built 35 homes throughout Central Alberta. To date, we have built homes in Three Hills, Delburne, Lacombe and Red Deer, and continue to work towards building additional homes in several other communities.
