The Ellinson Family
Lisa and her two boys have been selected as one of our families for our most recent Blackfalds build! Growing up in Blackfalds, it has always been important to Lisa to raise her boys there too. They currently live in a rented trailer with a leaking roof and mice, during the winter months the windows freeze up and let in the cold air with moss and mold growing in different rooms throughout the trailer. The family has experienced crime and theft in their neighborhood. With more downs than ups, their place has never felt like home, but it’s a roof over their heads for now – sadly not a safe or healthy place to raise kids.
Lisa found out about Habitat Red Deer from her dad and applied because she doesn’t want to feel trapped anymore in a trailer that is falling apart and costing more money to fix. She has always dreamed of giving her sons a house worth calling home, and this Habitat opportunity has offered a sense of relief knowing they will always feel safe and can make lifelong friends with their new neighbors! With dreams of taking the boys to Disneyland one day, having a decent home will provide the stable foundation to help them realize their future goals. Lisa says applying for a Habitat home is “the best thing I ever did for my family” and is “worth every minute and every emotion.” As a single parent, Lisa is working hard to provide the home her children need, to see them grow and learn in a safe environment. There is no better reason than to do it for your children.
Lisa currently volunteers at the Blackfalds Food Bank and our ReStore, and is very excited to volunteer at the build site to help build her future home. Lisa sends her thanks to all the wonderful people out there who are selflessly volunteering their time and hard work to those less fortunate. She adds: “We truly appreciate all you do. You are truly amazing, and we would not have this opportunity without you all.”
We are committed to helping families like Lisa’s throughout Central Alberta, building homes and building hope with the help of our community!
