Volunteer Opportunities

At Habitat for Humanity Red Deer Region Society we believe in the power of volunteers. Our organization exists and thrives in the Central Alberta community because of dedicated volunteers and sponsors like you! We view every volunteer as a stakeholder and equal partner in our cause. Volunteers are the very heart and soul of our organization and come from all walks of life to support our efforts in ending the cycle of poverty through homeownership. We are always looking for new, eager, passionate individuals to join our growing team of volunteers. Volunteers are needed in the following areas:

ReStore Customer Service

This position requires engaging, outgoing, and professional volunteers to assist our customers in the ReStore! As a customer service volunteer, your duties will include general customer service and general labour. Tasks may include assisting customers with purchases, customer inquiries, answering phone calls, cleaning, pricing items, fixing items, inventory control, and more. The ReStore is open Monday to Friday 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Full or half day shifts are available.



ReStore General Labour

This position requires personable, hardworking, and physically-able volunteers to assist with general customer service and the maneuvering of items in the ReStore. As a general labour ReStore volunteer, your duties will include, but are not limited to; loading and unloading merchandise from vehicles, assisting customers with delivery and pick-up, moving items on the floor, and general housekeeping. You must be able to easily lift 30lbs for this position. The ReStore is open Monday to Friday 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Full or half day shifts are available.

Construction General Labour

This position requires hard-working, eager, and physically-able volunteers to assist our Construction Manager on our build sites! Duties range from framing and dry walling to painting and landscaping. You will be placed in a position that suits your experience and comfort level. From skilled trade workers to volunteers who have little to no experience in construction, we have a place for everyone. Only full day shifts are available.



Construction Food Service

This position requires generous, personable, outgoing volunteers to assist with serving food at the build site. As a Food Service Volunteer, you are responsible for making sure all workers are fed and hydrated and to ensure clean-up happens in a timely manner. There are shifts that are approximately 1.5 to 2 hours over lunch time. We also offer shorter shifts in the morning or afternoon for volunteers to deliver snacks and coffee to the build site. These are the shortest volunteer shifts we offer.

Marketing and Administration

There is always a need for office volunteers. This is a great way to gain experience and build your resume. This is a volunteer position that allows you to choose the task that best fits your interests. In this volunteer position, you may create engaging content for social media, participate in content development for the website, take photos, tidy up office space or equipment, and much more.

We often participate in community events, or host fundraisers. Events are a great way to network and engage with the community. This requires passionate Habitat advocates to act as ambassadors, answer questions, and speak to the public on our behalf. This position requires you to have a general understanding of the Habitat culture, language, and the principles for which we stand. You must be outgoing and able to represent Habitat for Humanity Red Deer in a professional manner to be considered for this position.

We encourage businesses, teams, community groups, or groups of friends and family to get involved. What better way to learn the value of team building, co-operation and leadership skills than by volunteering with your peers? Groups can volunteer in any capacity they choose. From volunteering on a build site or in the ReStore to lending your expertise, equipment, or facility to a project.

To participate as a group, we require a minimum 1-day commitment and a minimum of 3 volunteers.

General Duties of Board Membership

All members must stay informed on organizational matters, and participate in the Board’s deliberations and decisions in matters of policy, finance, programs, audit and risk, personnel and advocacy.

  • Monitor all Board policies.

  • Review the bylaws and policy manual, and recommend bylaw changes to the membership.

  • Review the Board’s structure, approve changes, and prepare necessary bylaw amendments.

  • Participate in the development of HFH’s organizational plan and annual review.

  • Approve HFH’s budget.

  • Approve the selection and release of the Executive Director.

  • Support and participate in evaluating the Executive Director.

  • Assist in developing and maintaining positive relations among the board, committees, and community to enhance HFH mission.

How to become a Volunteer
How to become a Volunteer

Good news, you’ve already taken the first step to become a Habitat for Humanity Red Deer Region Society Volunteer. Now you just need to fill out a volunteer application and submit it to our Volunteer and Communications Coordinator. Our office and ReStore is located at 4732 78A Street Close, Red Deer, Alberta T4P 2J2.

There are three ways to submit your application:

  1. Online – You can fill out our application here
  2. By email – Applications can be submitted directly to our Volunteer and Communications coordinator Shannon Humphrey at: shannon.humphrey@habitatreddeer.ca
  3. In person – You are always more than welcome to pop in to our office or the ReStore to fill out a volunteer application and chat with a member of our team. You may also submit applications in person at any of our community events or fundraisers.

Once your application has been approved you will be added to our contact list and you can start signing up for shifts. Thank you for your interest in Habitat for Humanity Red Deer Region Society. We look forward to working with you.

Donors

Donations of goods, materials, money and/or professional services help us build more Habitat homes in the community.

If you would like to make a monetary donation online, we are registered through CanadaHelps so you can donate in a safe and secure way!

With CanadaHelps, you can make a one-time donation or set up a monthly donation plan. CanadaHelps provides a cost effective alternative to setting up our own online donations facilities: there is no set up fee, no annual charges and we receive immediate notification when a donation is received.

Habitat for Humanity Red Deer Region Society is a registered, charitable, non-profit organization and donations are eligible for a tax receipt.





Anyone can donate to our ReStore, located at 4732-78A Street Close, Red Deer, Alberta T4P2J2. We will thankfully accept reusable building materials that you no longer want or need!

Simply bring your items to the ReStore main entrance and our team of associates will help you unload your materials.

If your items are too large to bring to the store yourself, we will happily arrange a pick-up from your home, free of charge. To arrange a pick-up, please call 403-309-6080 ext. 3.
