RED DEER (August 23, 2018) - Habitat for Humanity Red Deer held its first-ever Women’s Build in late August 2018. The pink-themed event attracted widespread support from Central Alberta women, and had full attendance by 13 female, and one male volunteer.

Habitat Red Deer CEO, Karen Vavrek, says the importance of the event is special in that 40-50 percent of families who own Habitat Homes are single mothers, so it’s a powerful message having women build homes for other women.

All-women professional painting company, The Curvy Brush, volunteered as painting mentors for the day and helped lead small groups in build tasks. Volunteers dressed all in pink T-shirts and were hosted by Revera Retirement Living for lunch, for whom Habitat for Humanity is their 2018 Charity of Choice.

Through the mentorship of The Curvy Brush and construction staff, the Women’s Build volunteers painted doors, and attached and sealed trim. The women had the opportunity to network with other local women, give back to families in need, and learn valuable and relevant skills they can use in their own homes, with professional painting tips from The Curvy Brush. Of the event, a volunteer said “I’m so happy that I chose to volunteer with Habitat for Humanity. As someone who does not have a lot of experience finishing a house, I was kind of intimidated going into it. However, everyone was so patient and helpful that it was a blast the entire day. I would definitely do it again.”

The Aspen Ridge duplex is one of Habitat Red Deer’s 2018 affordable home projects, having its groundbreaking in February 2018 and due to be completed and ready for move-in for future homeowners in early November 2018. The Aspen Ridge duplex marks the first Habitat Home build in Red Deer in a while, where the organization has been building in Lacombe for the past few years. The duplex will be home to a family of four, and a mother and her child.
