The benefits of the Habitat Affordable Homeownership Program

One of the most prominent challenges families face in owning a home is saving for a down payment and having affordable mortgage payments. In the Habitat for Humanity Affordable Homeownership Program, homeowners pay no down payment on their home, no interest accumulates on their mortgage, and mortgage payments never exceed 30% of their gross income.

Affordable Homeownership Program Eligibility and Criteria

Our home ownership program is open to all Canadian Citizens or Permanent Residents of three years or more.

The program is open to families of all cultures, ethnicities, and backgrounds. Habitat homeowners represent a variety of family structures, including single-parent and dual-parent families, as well as families with elderly or young adult members. Families also come with a range of abilities.

Who Can Apply?

Families are selected after meeting several criteria. Some of the basic eligibility requirements to be considered for a Habitat home are:

  • Need for decent and affordable shelter, does not currently own any real estate

  • Ability to pay an affordable mortgage, having a gross household income between $45,000 and $70,000. (Family size can change income range requirements)

  • An adult parent in the home is employed full-time

  • Has a dependent child under the age of 18 who lives in the home at least 50% of the time

  • Be a Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident of at least three years

  • Has been discharged from bankruptcy or a consumer proposal for a minimum of three years

  • Willing to partner with Habitat Red Deer and complete 500 volunteer hours

We recognize that the land on which we work, gather, and live is within the territory of the Blackfoot, Tsuu T’ina, and Stoney Nakoda peoples and that the Central Alberta region we serve falls under Treaty 6, traditional Métis, Cree, and Saulteaux territory. We acknowledge and honour the First Peoples who have lived here since time immemorial. We stand with the Indigenous peoples of Alberta and continue to advocate for reconciliation.
