Habitat Red Deer's Affordable Homeownership Program
With the help of volunteers and generous donors, Habitat for Humanity builds decent and affordable homes that provide a solid foundation for people to build better, healthier lives in Canada and around the world.
Habitat Red Deer has an Affordable Homeownership Program that bridges the gap for people who face barriers to homeownership and would otherwise not have an opportunity to buy a home. Habitat Red Deer promotes affordable homeownership through a hand-up and working in partnership with families.
The homes in the Affordable Homeownership Program are built by Habitat and are sold to selected families at fair market value. The family enters a no-down-payment, zero-interest, affordable mortgage with Habitat Red Deer. The mortgage payments are set at no more than 30% of the family’s gross income. The mortgages have some special terms, such as requiring that the homeowners remain the principal occupants of the home and keep it in proper repair. Should the homeowners choose to move, they may sell it back to Habitat at any time, and a new family will then be selected to purchase the home.
Affordable Homeownership Program Homes
Habitat Red Deer has built 50 homes throughout Central Alberta. To date, we have built homes in Three Hills, Delburne, Lacombe, Red Deer, Sylvan Lake and Blackfalds and continue to work towards building additional homes in several other communities.
Home sizes and styles vary from build to build due to many factors.
It is common for Habitat Homes to be:

Three-bedroom, 1.5-bathroom homes

Have an unfinished basement

Be a multi-family style (i.e. duplex, triplex)
Habitat Red Deer provides homeowners with a fridge and stove. However, homeowners must provide their own dishwasher, microwave, washing machine, dryer, fencing, and additional landscaping.
The homeowner is also responsible for paying property taxes, home insurance, maintenance and repairs, and all other costs associated with owning and operating a home.
