Happy Black History Month! Habitat Red Deer is celebrating Black History Month by recognizing the significance of Black History and using our platform to recognize the unequal treatment and barriers Black individuals and families face on their journey toward homeownership. These systematic barriers have contributed to a disproportionate lack of homeownership opportunities.
Statistics Canada found that only 45% of Black people own their homes in 2023. Many Black people living in Canada have been unable to access the benefits of owning a home, including the ability to attain social and financial stability, build equity and transform futures. Last year, Meenah shared her story of becoming a Habitat Homeowner as a Black woman. You can read her story here: Reflecting on Black History Month and Homeownership with Meenah.
Habitat for Humanity Canada and CMHC have been working together to do more for Black families in Canada. We are removing barriers and creating pathways for Black families to become homeowners! Learn more here: Black Families Funding | Habitat for Humanity Canada
We encourage you to learn more about Black History Month and the intersectionality of affordable homeownership for Black families.
